Review | Citra, Mo, Simcoe | Overtone Brewing Co

Updated: Feb 7, 2021

I've always enjoyed the beers from Overtone Brewing Co, they're flavoursome, fresh and of the highest quality, using only the best ingredients... and the box of six I have just received from them continues to meet that standard.

First up from the selection is 'Citra, Mo, Simcoe' a New England IPA packed with Citra, Mosaic and Simcoe hops, giving it a punchy fruity flavour. In particular, Overtone have added a huge amount of Simcoe to the mix for a smooth citrus and passionfruit flavour, and boy is it ever!

On the nose I didn't get heaps of passionfruit but a beautiful 'hoppiness', as much of that fruity flavour comes from the hop itself when drinking than on the nose with this one. Knocking it back, which is easily done, the sheer smoothness is sublime and offers a beautiful, but gentle, sweetness alongside a wash of passionfruit to follow. The aftertaste of this cloudy New England IPA left me hanging with a definite citrus zestiness, conjuring the likes of orange peel.

Citra, Mo, Simcoe weighs in at a respectable 6.0% ABV and is relatively sessionable. I would say this would make a wicked choice to pair with a Sunday roast, or if you are having a few bevvies, save this one to second. I say this as if you switch to a lighter drink after this boy, a lighter, or less hoppier beer just won't cut it!
